I like the practice of lay it out and then divide in half, seldom pack only what's needed for 5 days, then time for laundry. Other personal stuff according to needs and preferences. Short trips, one carry on plus backpack. Longer trips, check a bag or two. Our many road trips in car and RV were easiest as we were on our own schedules, and the RV had all the conveniences and amenities built in, a small house on wheels. If we don't have what we want of need we'll find it along the way or do without if possible.
